The company names late 2027 as its target – the sales model, regions and pricing all remain open.

Key points

  • Amazon plans to make its Trainium AI chip available outside its own AWS cloud from late 2027.
  • The company has not yet said whether this means selling hardware, forming partnerships, or some other delivery model, nor has it named specific markets.
  • AWS’s current regional instance list does not show Trainium instances for London or Ireland. That does not yet tell us where the announced external offering will launch.

Amazon plans to offer its Trainium AI chip outside AWS from late 2027. Chief executive Andy Jassy announced this, according to the company, as part of its quarterly earnings. What “outside AWS” will mean in practice has not been explained.

The announcement will interest companies that train AI models and are weighing up different accelerator chips. But it is not yet a concrete sales offer: Amazon names no product form, no customers, no prices and no countries. Businesses in the UK and the US cannot yet work out from the statement when or how they might use Trainium outside the AWS cloud.

What Amazon has announced

In a post about its third-quarter 2026 results, Amazon quotes a statement from Jassy: customers had repeatedly asked the company to make Trainium available outside AWS. Amazon intends to do this “by the end of 2027”. The statement is therefore a company plan with a target timeframe – not a commitment to an already bookable product. Amazon documents the statement in its Q3 earnings report (in English).

Trainium is Amazon’s own chip family for AI computing tasks. AWS describes it as an accelerator built specifically for training and running AI models. So far, AWS has made Trainium available mainly through its own cloud instances. AWS’s product page explains the chip’s current use within the cloud offering (in English).

Amazon linked the announcement to growing demand for its own chips. The figures it published alongside this – for example on revenue commitments or possible customer savings – come from the company itself and are not independently verified comparison figures. For the planned availability outside AWS, Jassy gave no further technical or commercial details in the statement.

What is still unclear

The central open question is the product form. “Available outside AWS” could mean many things: chips or complete systems for other companies’ data centres, delivery through partners, or some other usage model. Amazon has not yet said which variant it means. Details on the chip generation, volumes, minimum order quantities, support and software are also missing.

It is equally unclear whether companies would be able to run the hardware themselves, or whether Amazon or its partners would operate it. These details matter: they determine what investment customers would need to make and how they could integrate the chip into their existing infrastructure. The announcement alone does not point to either a direct sale or a specific market launch.

What the announcement means for the UK and US

There is no concrete commitment for the UK or the US so far. The current AWS overview of EC2 instance types by region (in English) lists Inf1, Inf2 and P4d for the London region (eu-west-2) among accelerated instances, but no Trainium (Trn1/Trn2) instances; the Ireland region (eu-west-1) likewise lists no Trainium instances. US East (N. Virginia, us-east-1), by contrast, already offers Trn1 and Trn1n instances through AWS’s own cloud. That describes the currently documented AWS status, not the future offering outside the cloud.

For UK and US businesses, an offer outside AWS would become relevant once it is actually available locally and can be used in their own data centres or through a local infrastructure partner. That is currently a possibility, not a confirmed plan for either country. Questions about data protection, data location, availability and cost also remain unanswered.

The news is therefore above all a signal of more choice in AI computing power – not yet a reason to change existing infrastructure plans. The plan will only become solid once Amazon publishes the delivery model, technical specifications, regions and terms.

Frequently asked questions

When is Trainium supposed to become available outside AWS?

Amazon names late 2027 as its target. The company has not yet announced an exact date or a booking start.

Has Amazon announced that it will sell Trainium chips?

No. Amazon speaks of availability outside AWS but has not yet named a specific sales or operating model.

Is Trainium already available in AWS’s London region?

The current AWS overview of EC2 instance types lists no Trainium instance for the London region. The announced external offering is separate from this and has not yet been tied to specific regions.

Which details would matter most to businesses in the UK and the US: a possible location in Europe or North America, the price, or whether Trainium can be run in their own data centres? Share your view in the comments.
